A pioneering Huddersfield based charity, which
brings music and the performing arts alive to deaf people
across the UK, has seen its staff increase by 33% thanks to
a Business Development Grant provided by West Yorkshire Social
Enterprise Link (WYSE Link - a sub brand of Business Link
West Yorkshire which is funded by Yorkshire Forward.)
Music and the Deaf, based in The Media Centre,
Huddersfield, aims 'to help people of all ages and degrees
of hearing loss to access music and the performing arts' and
runs a wide range of activities including workshops; after
school clubs for deaf young people; training for musicians
working with deaf people and provides a programme of sign
language interpreted performances in theatres. Performances
of blockbuster shows such as Les Misérables, Cats, Chitty
Chitty Bang Bang and Chicago have all been made more accessible
to deaf people through Music for the Deaf's work.
The dedicated team of staff, 75% of whom are
profoundly deaf themselves, has been delighted at the support
and advice received from WYSEL to access further funding.
Sue Rosborough, Administrator said: "It is good to have the
Social Enterprise Link team at the other end of the phone
to call when we need advice. They helped us to take a leap
of faith to expand our services and increase our staff numbers
and we are encouraged that their support will continue into
the future".
The grant and support have enabled Music and
the Deaf to widen their activities, recruiting a deaf workshop
leader to look at music technology and to increase workshop
provision across the UK.
The Social Enterprise Link team was delighted
that Music for the Deaf accepted the opportunity to run a
workshop at the FOOTSEY Trade Exhibition in 2006 and equally
delighted when the organisation won its Innovation in Enterprise
Award in 2005.
